Poker Combinations
A great article for all those poker starters who do not yet know which cards give which combinations and/or which combinations are the best and which are the worst. Don’t get lost in cards again and start predicting your combinations more often.
Best and Worst Cards
The cards are rated. Ace is the highest card, and 2 is the lowest card.
Ace-King-Queen-Jack-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2
Please note, that Ace can be highest and lowest card at the same time (usually it is highest)
There are also 4 suits
Hearts
, Diamonds
, Clubs
and Spades ![]()
Combinations
Each combination in poker consists out of 5 cards. Below are listed all possible poker combinations (from highest to lowest)
Royal Flush
Consists of: Ace-King-Queen-Jack-10 same suit
The highest combination in poker. Hard to get, but if you got it, you can consider yourself as the winner of the hand. The example below shows Royal Flush hearts.
Straight Flush
Same suite 5 cards which are in order.
The highest card in Straight Flush is very important. For example 8
7
6
5
4
will beat 7
6
5
4
3
. Please note, that Ace can be highest and lowest card in the same card (5-4-3-2-Ace - Ace is lowest card, while 5 is the highest)
Four of a Kind
Four same kind cards, while the fifth card can be any card. The highest card in this combination isimportant. As for example, 4-4-4-4 will beat 3-3-3-3.
Full House
This combination consists of 3 cards which have the same kind + a pair. The highest card in 3 of a kind is the most important. For example, 9-9-9-4-4 will beat 4-4-4-Ace-Ace
Flush
5 same suit cards. If the highest card is the same, then second card is under consideration. For example, A-K-7-3-Q will beat A-K-9-4-5.
Straight
If 5 cards are in order then it is a straight (suit doesn’t matter here). The highest card in the combination is the most important. For example, J-10-9-8-7 will beat 10-9-8-7-6, because J is higher than 10
Three of a Kind
Three cards, which are the same kind + any other 2 cards. The card in this combination is the most important. For example, A-A-A-4-5 will beat Q-Q-Q-2-9, because A is higher than Q.
Two Pairs
Two same kind card pairs + any other card. If the two pairs are the same, then the 5th card is important. for example, A-A-K-K-4 will beat A-A-K-K-3, because 4 is higher than 3.
One Pair
One same kind pair. + any other 3 cards. If pairs are the same, then other 3 cards are under consideration. For example, A-A-K-5-2 will beat A-A-Q-J-10, because K is higher than Q.
Highest Card
5 cards which don’t give any combination at all. If such situation occurs, then the highest card is under consideration. For example, A-Q-J-5-2 will beat K-J-5-3-7, because A is higher than K.
I hope this article will help all those who just started playing poker and they don’t really know yet which cards give combinations and which combinations are higher than others. Good luck playing poker!

Are you sure that A-K-9-4-5 will beat A-K-7-3-Q in a flush? o_O

I have a problem with your flush definition. How come A-K-9-4-5 beats A-K-7-3-Q when the second one has a queen in it? Otherwise you’ve done a good job.
